We are in transition from building this wonderful facility to managing it sustainably for the indefinite future. Our strategy for doing this includes three elements. First, we are working with the RE-1 School District, the Rotary Club and Carbondale restaurants to help us create "Enterpise Teams" of students to raise certain herbs and vegetables for restaurant kitchens, as small businesses, complete with business plans, food safety training and enterprises possible under the new Colorado Cottage Foods Law. Second, we are partnering with Youth Entity and their culinary arts program for high school students, toward establishing model relationships between young growers and chefs, to inspire all of the students to establish business networks for their passion to grow high quality food. Third, we are working to gather a group of Carbondale gardeners, to help design, plan and create a "Community Forest Garden on the eastern half of the RFHS outdoor garden, where we have already planted an orchard of fruit trees. We hope this will become a new model of community garden, one based on Natures "polyculture" methods, and focused on shared work and harvests.
Finally, we are looking for a partner to
invest in a tiny enterprise involving our ag-bio students, of raising fish in
the growing dome fish tanks. Until now,
the tanks have been filled with water and floating plants, just to help provide
the mass in which we store solar heat for cold nights in Winter. We hope this will be a healthy, thriving enterprise, providing fresh fish to restaurants and the school kitchen.

RFHS Grain Trials, Summer 2011

Summer 2011 saw the beginning of the 1/2 acre garden outside of the Growing Dome. Students learned while helping Mary to compost, layer materials and build planting rows in the garden, build temporary row covers for early Spring starts, and plant the first grain trials around the dome.
Some of the produce harvested from the dome and garden this Summer was sold to the Carbondale Food Coop, our first earned income!
Most of the vegetables and grains raised in the garden this Summer were harvested and integrated into the cafeteria kitchen, or processed and frozen for later use. Two Aspen High School graduates, volunteering at the Permaculture Institute before attending Prescott College for agricultural sciences, harvested the rye and the hard red winter wheat grains, threshing the grains from the chaff using a push mower on a mesh picnic table, with a sheet of plywood underneath to collect the grains. They netted nearly 50 lbs of rye and wheat.
Mary Cervantes did a great job with the plants in the Growing Dome and Garden last school year and this Summer, and she left everything is good condition for her successor.
Hadley Hentschel and his students have been putting the outside beds into hibernation mode for Winter, after mulching lots of decaying plant material over the soil, to enrich them for next year. The annual beds in the dome have been harvested, mulched and replanted with Winter greens and vegetables.
Riley Blacksmith donated most of the cost of making the planting bed brackets you see here, and Valley Lumber gave us a great price on the rebar, u-bolts and corrugated metal. We hope to complete the planting beds, fill them with soil and plants, build the aquaculture tanks, and wire the climate battery thermostats and fans, all before a Community "Thank You" Potluck we plan to hold from 5 - 8 pm, Sunday, August 1.

In late May and early June, we placed the Insulation Skirt around the dome in a trench dug by our volunteer excavator, Frank Hagemann. Justin and Patrick, interns at CRMPI, worked with Michael and Jerome to complete the insulation perimeter and to form and insulate for the door slabs. TJ Conrete sent a crew over in mid-June to pour the entry slabs, and Louis Meyer brought his backhoe/loader to backfill the perimeter for us. A truckload of straw from the Co-Op enabled us to keep moving, getting the dome frame and the top vents installed by the end of the day, and the last drop of rain for awhile.
Sunny Sunday provided us perfect weather for completing the dome covering and insulating the interior walls, and on Monday our Growing Spaces crew completed the entrances, hung the doors, installed the ventilation fans, packed up and headed for home. Thank you, Growing Spaces! This Growing Dome will make you proud.
We are still in need of funds and help as we plant the Growing Dome, fence the garden areas, run irrigation systems and prepare the outdoor beds for planting. Please mail donations to:
Frank Hagemann and his associate Larry excavated the hole for us on Thursday, architect Michael Thompson and CRMPI Intern Justin Wright built the first of four manifolds to transmit warm moist air from the greenhouse through the soil, storing heat and moisture for use during cold nights, allowing the raising of Mediterranean-zone food plants all year. (see March 30 post for 3d drawings of climate battery)
Saturday morning, many members of the Carbondale Rotary Club, RFHS Principal Clif Colia, project organizer Illene Pevec, and more members of the Carbondale community, guided by Michael and aided by Frank and his skid-steer, built the remaining three manifolds, assembled the climate battery and backfilled it with soil. Thanks to Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers, we had all the Shovels, McClouds and Wheelbarrows we needed. We left one row of tubing on the east side for the high school Ag-science students to install on Sunday, because they were away at sports games all day Saturday.
D. Fat City Farmers mission & budget discussion:
a. If we complete RFHS greenhouse and garden, and Basalt Elementary dome this year, we will have raised and spent around $100,000 from a willing community;
b. If we plan, design, fund-raise and accomplish construction of the Aspen Middle School greenhouse in 2011, we will have to come close to doubling our efforts in 2010, raising about $200,000. I personally think this should not be difficult in Aspen.
c. How will we accomplish these fundraising goals? Let’s make a plan for how each of us can help. Maybe we should have a training session in how to present our mission to people, how to get all the folks out there who are TALKING about local food and about gardening, all the businesses wanting to be GREEN. Here we are with the perfect opportunities for them to shine. Let’s help get them to the table to help us with this mission;
It's taken a long time, I know, but we are ready to build the greenhouse dome! First, Frank Hagemann will dig the excavation by April 23, then the climate battery built and backfilled during a volunteer weekend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 23, 24 & 25.

Then our foundation contractor, TJ Concrete, will move in with our excavator to augur the pier holes, locate and set the sonotube forms with rebar and pour the concrete. We will give them two weeks to accomplish this, then on Monday May 10, Growing Spaces' assembly crew will begin erecting the dome. They will welcome small numbers of volunteers to help, Monday thru Friday. We anticipate engaging the HS students in this work, primarily, but will welcome anyone with a whole day on their hands, who is good with their hands.

Finally, we will have our second and final volunteer weekend, Friday May 14 through Sunday May 16, to place the perimeter insualtion, backfill the insulation with gravel, and to clean up the site. On May 30, Sunday afternoon at 4:00, we will have a community potluck dinner at the greenhouse dome, during which time we'll take the opportunnity of an audience to thank all the contributors to getting this greenhouse built, and to inform everyone of our educational plans for the High School and the entire Community. Please let us know if we are missing any donor's names in our thank-you list in the right sidebar.

Thank, you, thank you, everyone!!
Michael Thompsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13842072221798462123noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6818479189297669496.post-65776332804053453492009-11-20T13:39:00.001-08:002009-11-20T14:03:30.998-08:00RFHS Greenhouse Design

Click on an image to see it appear larger on your screen. DOWNLOAD PDF
Michael Thompsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13842072221798462123noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6818479189297669496.post-35559256109603638722009-08-26T15:25:00.000-07:002010-05-27T09:05:41.234-07:00Draft of Colorado Home & Garden show Grant - Letter of intentAugust 26, 2009
We would like to express our gratitude for the opportunity to share the details of our project with you and thank you for providing grants for horticultural education in Colorado. Our organization it committed to increasing the health and well being of our local communities through local food production and agricultural education. We are very excited about the Roaring Fork high school Greenhouse & Garden project because we understand the value of growing and cooking food as a hands-on teaching tool and hope the project can serve as an inspiration and model for other public schools in Colorado and the nation as a whole.

ROARING FORK HIGH SCHOOL GREENHOUSE & GARDEN PROJECT
Initiated and managed by the Central Rocky Mountain Permaculture Institute
Fundraising and community organization managed by Fat City Farmers, Inc. and Illene Pevec (Angel earning her wings);
42’ dome greenhouse & 1-1/2 acre edible schoolyard project
Outdoor classroom space / Horticulture, cooking and food prep vocational classes
Cafeteria composting area and worm farm

Mission Statement:
The Central Rocky Mountain Permaculture Institute was founded in 1987 to research and demonstrate methods of environmentally sound agriculture, gardening, and landscape design. The Institute is dedicated to providing affordable educational workshops, residential internships and Permaculture design courses, and features a 1/2 acre high altitude demonstration garden and several greenhouses on site. Since 2007, CRMPI has widened it’s educational focus to community based agriculture initiatives, such as the CSA?Farm School and Edible Schoolyard projects, to help restore a local food economy the Roaring Fork Valley.

History:
For decades, the Central Rocky Mountain Permaculture Institute has been a leader in local sustainability and has been an advocate for ecologically sound organic growing practices. The Institute has provided courses in Permaculture Design and community accesible workshops on many gardening related topics. CRMPI has always advocated local food production for the health of the community and to reduce the reliance on fossil fuels.

Project Purpose:
The Roaring Fork high school Greenhouse & Garden project is a collective effort between CRMPI, the RE-1 school district, partner organizations, University extension agents, volunteers and the town of Carbondale. The high school has set aside land surrounding the school building to use for this purpose, and unanimous approval from the school board has been given to build a 42’ geodesic dome greenhouse and a 1/2 acre garden on the grounds of the Roaring Fork High School in Carbondale. Letters of recommendation have been received from the Colorado Community College System and and research on the project is being coordinated by Illene Pevec, a Ph.D. candidate from CU Boulder.
This project is privately funded and will provide an outdoor classroom for hands-on learning and will be utilized by several classes of students per year. High school teachers and Edible Schoolyard educators will integrate food systems concepts into the school’s core curriculum and students will grow healthy, organic produce for the school lunch program. Food preparation and cooking classes will be offered to compliment the food growing efforts. Sixty students are currently signed up to attend these new classes, and every effort is being made to secure the funds necessary to make this project a reality.

Total Project Costs:
Greenhouse Construction $56,600
minus funds raised to date:
C.O.R.E. Grant -$7,000
Fat City Farmers & Partners -$18,000
Total outstanding construction cost $31,600

Outdoor Garden & Orchard Installation $27,000
Agricultural Education Program (Operational expenses) per month $ 5,300 x 9 months $47,700

GRAND?TOTAL? $106,300

Amount of Funding Requested: $69,200
This funding amount covers initial costs for materials, construction and the first 2 months of operational expenses. Many local volunteer service and non-profit organizations are working to raise funds and grants have been written to provide ongoing operational funding for the project. $25,000 has been raised to date by our partner organizations and can be used as matching funds for the grant.
Further, taking into account the approximately $5,000 of in-kind donations promised by the Rotary Club members, we could say we are halfway to our goal.

We will have a conference call 1:00 - 1:45 Tuesday Aug. 25 (see instructions @ right sidebar), to discuss “where we go from here”:
CURRICULUM W/O GREENHOUSE: Do we help Hadley teach his Ag curriculum without the greenhouse? Do we erect a cheap hoophouse, and get at least some growing time before winter?
WAIT FOR C.O.R.E.’s GRANT CYCLE? Do we wait for C.O.R.E.’s next large grant cycle in January? Given their policy of being no more than a 30% partner, we will need to raise significant other money anyway, so we should ramp up our efforts now;
BUILD THE GREENHOUSE PIECEMEAL: If we can nail down specific donations for materials, labor and equipment from Rotary Club members, we could get the climate battery and foundation built now, and as we raise the funds to buy and install the greenhouse, we get it built when we can, even if it’s winter, and only if the School Board will allow.

I think a good goal set from this point would be:
1 Help Hadley teach his classes, however he and Jerome decide it should be done;
2 Get community help to build the climate battery and foundation for the dome;
3 Keep the fundraising efforts going full speed, order the dome by early October and install it by mid November;
4 Identify and obtain materials for students to build the planting beds, aquaculture tanks and trellis once the dome is finished;
5 With a successful erection of the greenhouse before the New Year, our grant application to C.O.R.E. in January will have momentum, and get help with the Garden.

The fundraising for each of the three parts of the program should be done as follows (assuming a max. C.O.R.E. contribution of 25% in January):

Greenhouse Construction: $56,600 Total:
Max. C.O.R.E. Contribution: $7,000
Fat City Farmers & partners: $49,600 (we are just at $18,000 now)

Garden Construction: $27,000 Total:
Max. C.O.R.E. Contribution: $6,750
Fat City Farmers & partners: $20,250

Agricultural Education Program: $5,300 per month until the School has it's program integrated into its science curriculum, and the CSA Farm School is financially independent.
Max. C.O.R.E. Contribution: $1,325
Fat City Farmers & partners: $3.975Michael Thompsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13842072221798462123noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6818479189297669496.post-29103695087071535262009-05-08T11:03:00.001-07:002010-05-27T09:07:31.258-07:00Proposal Documents for Download
We will briefly introduce our partner organizations, Fat City Farms, C.O.R.E., the Basalt Thrift Store, and Slow Food Roaring Fork, and thank the School Board for this meeting, and for their questions, after.
Why we are before you:We are part of a growing national movement to improve our food supply in healthfulness, safety, and security, as well as to reduce the food industry’s “carbon footprint” by creating local food production and distribution networks. We are very fortunate in the Roaring Fork Valley, to have a history of farming and ranching, as well as excellent present-day instructors, experienced with growing food in this climate: Jerome Osentowski, Ken Kuhns, Jennifer Craig, and others. Some of the essential “glue” that binds all these efforts together is fundamental: improving the healthfulness of food for our children, in their school lunch. Giving them the understanding and the skills to grow their own food, and to learn how to grow it in ways that are healthy for the eater, as well as for the land, is “priceless”.
What we propose:
A partnership with RE-1 to provide the land and water at RFHS, for us to build a greenhouse and a fenced-in garden area, as a Carbondale Center for our CSA Farm School operations, and for the RE-1 School District’s emerging agricultural curricula. Our CSA Farm School will use garden and greenhouse facilities from early May through September (5 months) each year. Some of our Farm School instructors and graduating students will be available to assist your Teachers, as they prepare and run their own classes, from October through April (7 months) each year. We will use September to wind-down our operations, and to give your Teachers and their Students “tours” to orient them for their school year in the greenhouse. We will also be able to involve the classes in outdoor harvesting work during September and October, when they can reap some of our Summer crops for their cafeteria. We will also engage with your Teachers and Students in the Spring, as we come in to help plant the outdoor gardens in April, and take over for our CSA Farm School operations in May.
How we will accomplish this goal:· Fundraising efforts already underway, for private and foundation grants, for the design and construction, including the 2009 5 Point Film Festival, CORE, Brady Foundation and Cleveland Foundation donations;
· Greenhouse Dome, diameter 42-feet, with multi-wall polycarbonate greenhouse covering, vent panels and ventilating fans, controls, backup heating, aquaculture tanks, raised planting beds, potable water wash sink and irrigation systems, purchased with outside funding. We will place this structure outside the kitchen.
· Outdoor Garden fencing, terracing, irrigation, tool storage shed, soil, mulch, and annual and perennial plants, purchased with outside funding, and a confirmation from the Town of Carbondale, of ample water resources for the garden project;
· Construction and assembly of the greenhouse and garden area will be accomplished largely by volunteers, guided by CSA Farm School instructors and students, who will be working continuously through the Summer on it. If private funds are available in sufficient amounts, we will provide paid labor to accelerate the one-time construction process.
· Provide a Greenhouse Manager to “check in” frequently with RFHS Teachers, regarding maintenance of greenhouse climate control systems, backup heating, etc. As the RFHS curricula develop and Teachers gain experience, this position may revert to “on-call” status.
· CRMPI will provide complete liability insurance for property and participants in our CSA Farm School program during the Summer season, and will annually provide an insurance certificate, naming the Roaring Fork School District as additionally insured for CSA Farm School Summer operations.

· Complete communication, review and periodic inspection by Colorado Health Dept. inspector, for all agricultural operations on the site.
· Ongoing maintenance of greenhouse and garden areas, complete with replacement of damaged components and plants, as necessary.
What we will need from the RE-1 School District:· A letter of support for this project;
· Co-sponsorship of an agreement, with a termination clause, to lease the greenhouse and garden areas to CRMPI, for its CSA Farm School, with all conditions detailed;
· Some help with security, to focus one or two security cameras on the greenhouse and garden areas, to help deter, or to determine identity of vandals, if possible. We would rather deal with some sort of vandalism loss, than to create a prison-like atmosphere for our school farm.
· Access to land, irrigation water for the garden and potable water for the greenhouse. We will seek donation of a solar photovoltaic electric system for ventilation and heat storage fans, with batteries. We may request an electric-grid connection from the School, and use the Solar PV to sell electricity back through the meter, when the sun is shining.
· Insurance protection of RFHS students and other local public and private school participants, during their use of the facilities during Autumn, Winter and Spring seasons, by RE-1 School District insurance, already in place.
What opportunities will this present to RE-1 students and their community?· Real, homegrown food for lunch! “I grew this!”
· Farming curriculum, uniting science, sociology, zoology, civic studies, language, art, into FOOD. Priceless!
· Extracurricular learning through CSA Farm School, Summer programs, internships, lifelong education.
· Creating a culture of locally made food, will help generate the evolving “eco-science” of inhabiting this place, in a way that is healthy for the land, as well as for the people. This is exactly the science we need now, and always.
· Creating a culture of locally made food will keep a major economic resource re-circulating in the local community, re-generating local prosperity, supporting schools, families, businesses. We will begin building this economy together, starting with our schools.
We hope everyone is enthusiastically interested in this partnership and project. We are already underway, helping create a small geodesic dome greenhouse at Yampah Mountain High School, scheduled to be built in April. We intend to help all the willing schools in the Roaring Fork Valley to enter this emerging curriculum, with greenhouses and gardens wherever possible. We hope to reach our goal of an agricultural facility at each of the Valley’s public and private elementary and secondary schools, within the next half-decade.
Festival organizers are featuring our School Greenhouses, and are donating a portion of festival proceeds to the Roaring Fork High School Greenhouse & Gardens project. This event has great potential to inspire the Carbondale community, as well as the whole Valley, to help with our school greenhouses. We already have one success underway, in the Yampah Mtn. HS Greenhouse dome, featured this past week in the Glenwood Post Independent.
We have agreed to provide refreshments for the four days of the festival, in the form of baked goods, such as cookies, brownies, fruit bars, etc. Estimated quantity needed: 700 – 900 items. They don’t need to be individually wrapped, a wrapped plate of cookies will be fine. So, if each baker made 40 pieces, we would need to have 20 bakers; 80 pieces per baker = 10 bakers, etc. I am freezing 30 oatmeal-plum bars today, and will make more Monday evening. If you can help, please reply to this email to let me know what you can provide. We will post drop-off instructions for midday this Thursday, May 7, on the RFHS Greenhouse blog
Danny Brown and Fat City Farms have teamed up to produce a film trailer about the School Greenhouses. If we experience less than our hoped-for community support for this project, we may be able to afford the dome, and we can always add another greenhouse, if the program receives more school support than we expect.

Michael Thompsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13842072221798462123noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6818479189297669496.post-14344268734585584342009-04-13T21:02:00.000-07:002010-05-27T09:08:13.566-07:00Memorandum of Understanding - DraftThe Central Rocky Mountain Permaculture Institute (CRMPI) enters into an Agreement with the RE-1 School District, to build a Greenhouse and a 1.5 acre fenced Garden at the Roaring Fork High School in Carbondale, CO.

CRMPI and its non-profit partners C.O.R.E., Fat City Farms, Inc., the Basalt Thrift Store and others, will raise the funds necessary to build the greenhouse and gardens, and will organize the contractors and volunteers to construct it during the summer of 2009. CRMPI and its partners will use these facilities for their CSA Farm School program, from May through September each year, starting in 2010, and will train RFHS teachers in the use and maintenance of the facilities, on an ongoing basis, as needed. The 1.5 acre garden will be surrounded by an 8-foot deer fence with gates at the NE corner, for access via the fire lane. The greenhouse will contain a minimum of 1,300 SF in floor area, and will be no taller than 20-feet above the surrounding grade.
CRMPI will also provide:
1> Liability insurance to cover any injuries to CSA Farm School students during their program each year, as well as insurance against damage to the facilities;
2> A Greenhouse Manager to meet with RFHS teachers for 1/2 day per week during the RFHS school year, from September through May, to review greenhouse procedures, maintenance and to assist the teachers with organic and permaculture principals for healthy and sustainable food growing;
3> Design the greenhouse and gardens so their locations and relationship with surrounding land uses is in full compliance with Fire Access and Life Safety codes governing the RE-1 property;
4> Determine Colorado State Health requirements for growing and serving food in the school cafeteria and for establishing and maintaining an organic composting process, set up procedures for maintaining the required health standards, and communicate these procedures clearly to the RFHS teachers;
5> Maintenance and Upkeep of the gardens and greenhouse, in good working condition, for as long as this Agreement is in effect;
6> Automatic Solar Lighting around the greenhouse for security;
7> Maintenance of the grounds for a 30-foot perimter around the 1.5-acre gardens;
8> A lease to the RFHS, for its use of the facilities, for $1.00 per year.

RE-1 School District will provide:
a> Access to Irrigation Water for the 1.5-acre garden area;
b> Access to potable water for the greenhouse;
c> Security camera in the school security system, trained on the greenhouse;
d> Access to the greenhouse and the gardens via the Fire Lane;
e> Parking at RE-1 selected locations for CSA Farm School Students during their program;
f> Liability Insurance for injuries to RFHS teachers and students whenever they are using these facilities;
g> A lease to CRMPI for the use of the land and water, for $1.00 per year.

CRMPI and RE-1 further agree that if either party to this Agreement notifies the other party in writing that they wish to terminate this Agreement, one of the following will occur:
1> CRMPI will remove the greenhouse and garden fencingn the land to it's former state, or:
2> CRMPI will sell to the RE-1 School District the greenhouse and gardens facilities, for $1.00.

Please add any comments or questions in the comments link at the bottom of this post. We will hold a meeting with Judy Haptonstall and RE-1 Staff on Thursday afternoon, April 16 at 4:00 at the RE-w School District Offices in Glenwood Springs, to review this MOU and all subsequent issues raised, in hopes of submitting a final draft of the MOU for the School Board meeting on Wednesday, April 22.Michael Thompsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13842072221798462123noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6818479189297669496.post-54548435458041567222009-04-06T10:00:00.001-07:002009-04-22T11:55:40.152-07:00RFHS Hillside Garden - CO. Neither the Colorado Retail Food Establishment Rules and Regulations or the Rules and Regulations Governing Schools in the State of Colorado would preclude this type of endeavor either as a learning opportunity for the students or as a source of produce for the retail food operation.
The Colorado Retail Food Establishment Rules and Regulations do require that all foods come from an approved source and does recognize produce grown on site as approved. The produce is considered to be approved provided that only approved fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides or insecticides are used when growing the produce. My understanding of the proposed operation is that is would be completely organic and as a result there should not be a concern regarding chemicals. All produce grown would have to be washed in potable water after harvest and prior to consumption either in the greenhouse or in the school kitchen itself. Based on the information you provided, I understand that the local irrigation water will be used for growing the produce and the City of Carbondale municipal supply will be used for washing both in Th greenhouse and in the school as appropriate.
Provided these parameters, as previously discussed, are followed we would not have objection to the proposed venture for the school.
It is also my understanding that there is interest in implementing a composting program for the kitchen waste. Our concern would be that all food wastes to be composted are stored in such a manner as to prevent contamination of other foods, food contact surfaces, or serve as insect or rodent attractants. While this is an area of expertise for the Consumer Protection Division here at CDPHE, we would like to suggest the following individuals as potential resources for information, guidance and possibly training for establishing a composting program.
Possible contacts are:

Roger Doak, CDPHE HMWMD: Solid Waste 303-692-3437
roger.doak@state.co.us
Kathy C.
